labels are dehumanizing.
Faggot, slut, nigger, terrorist, bitch, hobo, them, us, sikh, hindu, punjabi, athiest, sunni, shia, infidel, Singh, Khalsa, jatt,… we all use them, and though they’re generally used to label fellow human beings, they do a wonderful job of making them seem a little less like us. Those minor changes in perception towards others goes a long way. You couple that with our general inclination towards being around people that look, think, talk, walk, act, and agree like us, you get a bunch of imaginary lines drawn to create some very real segregation. A lot of people think this is just an accident that can be remedied with some educational video & a couple of peace signs, but that’s the farthest from the truth. Divide & conquer has been a tactic used for centuries to keep things in order. The news does an amazing job of teaching us who to fear & who to hate, and we do a horrible job of asking our self “should I be buying all this?” I saw this dope speaker, and he said something fascinating “KNOWING is out of style, and BELIEVING is in fashion, we need to bring KNOWING back in style “. We need not confuse what we know vs. what’s been poured into our brains over & over by our parents, society, media & other influences. I only came to this realization after working with kids, and watching them regurgitate their parents teachings as if they were programed out the box. Every label we hold, every label we stick on others, every label we judge is not real. They’re not real, but they’re effective. These labels do a wonderful job of making the ‘other’ less like us & easier to care less for. We tend to care about the folks we see ourselves in the most. Though masked as compassion, it’s really a morbid self interest. It’s psychology though, and it applies to all of us, so it’s nothing to thumb our noses down on. But it is something we’re better off recognizing. I’m not an idealist, the practice of labeling won’t be going away anytime soon, but if you know you can shed one or two and open yourself up to folks you viewed as different, I promise you with every molecule of my being, your human experience will be that much more richer.

Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again. And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel? You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children.

Janpreet thinks, world would be a different place if he did not. Nonsensical, pellucid, uber basic, laid back, perceptible. Not good at sketching, singing, or writing. Overly sure of his skills. Smiles.
